CHAPTER EIGHT

ON FRIDAY MORNING, Brandon texted Angel.

When are you free for me to Skype you?

She really appreciated the fact that he’d remembered she preferred to speak face to face rather than struggle with the phone.

Lunchtime? she suggested. Around twelve?

OK. Talk to you then.

He was as good as his word. ‘Hey. I’ve found something we can do this weekend.’

‘What?’

‘It’s a surprise.’

She narrowed her eyes at him. ‘I’m an engineer. I’m not keen on surprises.’

‘It’s something you’ll definitely like,’ he said. ‘But it does mean staying away overnight. Is that OK?’

Overnight.

Did that mean he wanted to take things further with her—and this soon?

Her worries must’ve been obvious, because he said, ‘I planned to book us separate rooms.’

‘OK,’ she said cautiously. ‘As long as I pay for my own room.’

‘We’ll talk about that later,’ he said. ‘Can I pick you up at nine tomorrow morning?’

Meaning he’d have to leave Oxford at the crack of dawn? It still gave her no clue about where they were going; but she had to admit to herself that she was looking forward to spending time with him. They’d definitely become closer, this last week, and she was starting to feel comfortable with him. ‘All right.’

‘Good. I’ll see you then.’ His voice and his eyes were filled with warmth. ‘Text me your address so I can put it in the satnav.’

‘Will do. What’s the dress code?’

‘Casual. And do you have good walking shoes?’

‘Yes.’

‘Excellent. Bring them,’ he said. ‘I’ll see you tomorrow.’

So they were going walking? But where? And wouldn’t it make more sense for her to meet him wherever it was, rather than make him drive for two hours to her place first? Surely she was out of his way?

Though Angel was pretty sure that if she asked him straight out, he’d come up with some excuse that told her even less.

On Saturday morning her doorbell rang at nine o’clock precisely.

Brandon was wearing faded jeans, boots, and a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up halfway to his elbow and the neck unbuttoned. He looked utterly gorgeous; but he also seemed to be unaware of it rather than preening like a peacock. A couple of weeks ago, she’d had him pegged as arrogant and vain, but she was learning that he was nothing of the kind. And she really liked the man she was getting to know.

‘Hi.’ He leaned forward and kissed her on the cheek. ‘Ready to go?’

She indicated her small overnight bag, and he grinned. ‘That’s another good thing about dating an engineer. She packs sensibly.’

She pulled a face at him. ‘That’s horribly sexist. That, or you’ve been dating the wrong women.’

‘Probably true on both counts,’ he said with a smile. ‘My car’s parked a couple of doors down from you.’

She set the alarm, locked the front door and followed him to what turned out to be a newish and very expensive sports car.

‘How many cars do you actually own?’ she asked. There was the Mermaid, the car he’d driven to St Albans, and the one he’d driven in Oxford; this made at least the fourth different one.
